calculating or Changing your book’s price

Mission Point Press does its best to estimate your book’s page count and to recommend a cover price for your book. However, you may encounter a need to increase or decrease page count as your project heads to conclusion.

Or, even after you've published, competition and the economy may motivate you to look again at your cover price.

The impact of changes in pricing and page count are easy to measure by going to handy tools set up by both Kindle Direct Publishing and IngramSpark. In both situations, you simply go to their online template, plug in the new figures, and look at the results to both your book’s author-copy cost and your royalties.

Here are the links to these templates:

IngramSpark (IS):

Hint: You'll need to know your book’s trim size and other attributes, like hardcover or softcover, paper quality, color or black and white, etc. If the book is already in the IngramSpark system with an ISBN number, you should sign into your IngramSpark account, then click on this link. It will automatically insert your book’s ISBN number into the book’s profile and auto-fill all of the windows. Then you can run “what-ifs” for different cover prices.

Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP):

https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/GSQF43YAMUPFTMSP

Hint: KDP’s calculator is a bit easier to use than IngramSpark’s. You simply put in your book type (hardcover or softcover), paper and color type, page count, and list price to see the impact on your author-copy price and royalty. Feel free to play with “what-ifs” with your page count and cover price to see the impact of changes in either area.

Note: You can always change your book’s price after you publish! Although your book will launch with a set cover price, you have complete freedom as a self-published author to change the price at any time. A good rule of thumb, though, is to be careful about reducing it, because it will always be difficult to raise it should you second-guess yourself. So consider a price reduction carefully. And don't forget that Amazon.com is probably already discounting your book a bit as its algorithms monitor the market’s demand. So you’ll want to see what that price is before jumping the gun. Keep in mind that whenever you make changes to the text or price in your KDP or IS accounts, you must “republish” or “save” your book for the changes to take place. At KDP, keeping clicking through the windows until you reach the “Publish” button. At IngramSpark, use the “Save” button.
